Faculty Affiliates Loneke Blackman Carr, Assistant Professor in the Department of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Connecticut, and Kristen Cooksey Stowers, Assistant Professor in the Department of Allied Health Sciences at the University of Connecticut and Adjunct Assistant Professor in Population Health Sciences at Duke University, recently co-authored a new paper.
The study highlights inequities in weight loss interventions, noting that behavioral programs focused on diet and physical activity have often been less effective for Black adults compared to White participants. While research has focused on Black women, participation among Black men remains especially low—contributing to higher risks of obesity-related conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and other cardiovascular problems.
Through qualitative analysis, the paper examines barriers and facilitators to healthy eating, physical activity, and weight loss goals among Black adults with overweight or obesity, offering insights to design more inclusive and effective interventions.
